FlexiPay in the mobile app

“Graham brought strong product judgement at a critical point for the FlexiPay mobile app. He balanced design quality, technical feasibility, and delivery constraints, helping us align mobile and web experiences while driving real usage. His work contributed directly to increased mobile transactions and gave the team a solid foundation to build on.”
Project summary
Led design for the FlexiPay mobile app, testing feasibility and aligning mobile and web during a live rebrand.
The mobile app needed to move beyond POC and drive meaningful usage alongside the web dashboard.
Balancing API feasibility, backend constraints, and a new brand direction while delivering at pace.
A validated, re-skinned app helped 20% of FlexiPay transactions move through mobile and reached 25% MAU.
My role
I led product design for Funding Circle’s FlexiPay mobile app, working closely with product, engineering and stakeholders to test feasibility, align the app with a new brand direction and increase use of mobile payments alongside the web dashboard.
My role covered discovery, prototyping, customer testing and design-system decisions so the mobile app could move beyond proof of concept without adding technical or operational risk.
Problem
Funding Circle’s mobile app needed to move beyond proof of concept and become a credible, regularly used companion to the web product. It was visually out of step with the newly rebranded web dashboard and had not yet shown clear adoption.
Without a consistent experience across platforms, customers were less likely to trust or rely on the mobile app for regular transactions, limiting its value and growth potential.
Limited visibility into repayments and cash flow

Disconnected payment, repayment, and recipient flows

Challenges
The main challenge was getting the mobile app to production quality while checking that the API-dependent payment flows could work reliably.
This meant testing API feasibility in a native mobile environment, then applying a baseline re-skin while the broader design system was still in development.
All work needed to balance backend constraints with design requirements in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment.
Key decision
Rather than treat the rebrand, native app feasibility and design-system foundations as separate tracks, I aligned the mobile UI to the evolving web experience while testing the API-dependent flows that mattered most for regular usage.
Designing flexible payment controls within SME constraints

Outcome
A validated mobile app was delivered through feasibility testing, iterative prototyping and a baseline re-skin aligned to Funding Circle’s rebrand. The design-system work gave the team a shared starting point for future mobile and web development.
The resulting app demonstrated clear behavioural impact:
- 20% of all FlexiPay transactions now originate from the mobile app.
- 25% of FlexiPay users engage with the app at least once per month (MAU).
- Increased weekend spend, enabled by mobile accessibility and more frequent, flexible usage.
The work moved the app from proof of concept into a product customers were using alongside the core web platform.
